{June 11, 2009}   Inner dork: deaf culture

Yay! Not only is Inner Dork still around, but I actually remembered that today is Thursday and it’s Inner Dork day! It IS a big day!

Did you know…

Until roughly 100 years ago almost all the people who lived on Martha’s Vineyard were bilingual in sign language and English. The town developed their own dialect of sign language when a deaf person arrived in 1692. Between then and 1910 the relatively large, genetically deaf population, and most other inhabitants, recognized and could use their own particular sign language.

…and now you know!

Well…I seen not everything about you has changed. : ) And that’s a good thing!

GG: I wouldn’t dream of getting rid of Inner Dork Thursdays!

Makes me think of that joke where the husband, at one end of his big yard, calls to his wife at the other end of the yard to get her attention. When she looks up, he points to his eye, his knee and then makes a raking motion.

She nods and points to her eye, her boob, her ass and then her beaver.

The husband is perplexed, so he repeats his hand signs, pointing to his eye, his knee and then makes a raking motion.

The wife again points to her eye, her boob, her ass and then her beaver.

Frustrated, the husband runs over and says “Don’t you get it? I said ‘I, need, the rake!”

The wife said “I know that! I said ‘I, left tit, behind, the bush.’”

I guess it’s funnier in person, with the actions.

I know that has nothing to do with your post, other than the sign language thing. Sorry for the distraction.
